MELBOURNE, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2026) — As families across Brevard County begin the difficult process of recovering from widespread flooding, nearly 30 Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU) employees rolled up their sleeves Friday morning to help the American Red Cross prepare emergency relief supplies for their neighbors in need.
The employees gathered at Wickham Park Senior Center in Melbourne, where they worked alongside Red Cross volunteers to assemble flood relief kits that will be distributed to residents impacted by the historic rainfall.
For SCCU employees, the volunteer effort was an opportunity to give back to the very communities where they live and work.
“Typically, when a hurricane comes, you have time to prepare. What makes this situation unique is that a lot of people didn’t have time to prepare,” said Shane Hoyle, president and CEO of Space Coast Credit Union. “I grew up in Palm Bay, so this is near and dear to my heart. We know a lot of families are hurting right now, and we genuinely want to come out and help those families.”
Historic rainfall swept across Brevard County, with some areas receiving more than 20 inches of rain. The sudden flooding inundated homes and washed-out roads, displacing families in Palm Bay, Malabar, West Melbourne and surrounding communities.
The Red Cross quickly mobilized to support residents, opening an emergency shelter, providing meals and comfort, and deploying damage assessment teams to evaluate the extent of the destruction and help determine what additional assistance families may need.
The supplies assembled by SCCU employees will help support families as they begin cleaning up and recovering from the flooding.
“We are incredibly grateful to Space Coast Credit Union for the strong partnership we’ve built and their continued commitment to supporting the communities they serve,” said Janice Moran, Executive Director with the American Red Cross North and Central Florida Region. “Seeing nearly 30 SCCU employees come together to help their neighbors is a wonderful example of that commitment in action. Their willingness to give their time, along with the financial support they provide, helps us deliver hope and assistance to families when they need it most.”
In addition to volunteering, Space Coast Credit Union has committed financial support to local flood relief and recovery efforts.
The Red Cross is one of SCCU’s nonprofit partners through its Partners in Purpose program, an initiative that supports organizations making a meaningful difference in the communities the credit union serves.
Hoyle, a lifelong Florida resident who grew up in Palm Bay, emphasized the importance of neighbors coming together during difficult times.
“This is the time when the community has to come together and support each other,” Hoyle said. “The Red Cross is always there when our community is in need, and we want to do whatever we can to support that work. I’m confident our community will come together and help each other through this.”
As the Red Cross continues its response in Brevard County, partnerships with local organizations and businesses remain essential to meeting the immediate needs of disaster-affected families and supporting the recovery ahead.
