A fast-moving house fire on San Mateo Drive in Dunedin quickly became a life-or-death emergency. Thick smoke filled the home, flames spread rapidly, and neighbors reported an elderly man was trapped inside.
Firefighter-paramedic AJ Gonzales and firefighter-EMT Makayla Bowers with Dunedin Fire Rescue were the first to arrive — not in a fire engine, but in a medic unit equipped with only a three-gallon water can.
With no suppression equipment and conditions rapidly worsening, the pair made a split-second decision: gear up and enter the burning home. Directed to a rear bedroom, they conducted a rapid search as flames spread overhead and debris fell around them. They located the victim and brought him safely outside just moments before conditions deteriorated further.
Once outside, Gonzales and Bowers immediately began advanced lifesaving care, including airway management and administering a cyanokit to treat smoke inhalation. Their swift actions saved the man’s life.
For their extraordinary bravery, Gonzales and Bowers received Dunedin Fire Rescue’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor, and were also presented with the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award.
Mike Brown, executive director of the Tampa Bay area for the American Red Cross, emphasized the importance of recognizing everyday heroes.
“It’s important to recognize the extraordinary work of the men and women we work with every day in emergency response,” Brown said. “They truly live and breathe the lifesaving mission.”
Both firefighters credited training and teamwork, noting that their actions reflect the professionalism and courage their crews bring to emergencies every day.
Through courage, preparation and compassion, Gonzales and Bowers exemplified the mission of the American Red Cross — taking action when every second counts.
