Multiple homes and properties were damaged following a dangerous storm in northwest Florida last week, leaving behind a trail of uprooted trees and twisted metal. In the aftermath, the American Red Cross quickly mobilized to help. Disaster response teams worked around the clock, providing comfort and care to more than a dozen families impacted by the storm—including Paul and Debbie Harbaugh.
The Harbaughs had been in their home when the storm hit. The powerful winds tore a large hole in the roof over the back part of the house, allowing heavy rain to pour in. Water leaked into their kitchen, damaging walls and ceilings and leaving much of their home unlivable. They were heartbroken and overwhelmed, unsure how to begin picking up the pieces.
Paul reached out to the Red Cross, and within just two hours, a team arrived at their home. Volunteers assessed the damage, provided emergency financial assistance for essentials like food, temporary lodging, and clothing, and connected the couple with community partners and agencies for additional support.
“We were just trying to figure out what to do next when the Red Cross showed up,” said Paul Harbaugh. “They were here so fast—it really meant a lot to us. They didn’t just bring help, they brought hope.”
In times of disaster, the Red Cross plays a vital role in helping families take the first steps toward recovery. Thanks to the compassion and commitment of disaster responders, families like the Harbaughs are not left to face the aftermath alone. The road ahead may be long, but with the right support, recovery is possible—one step, one act of kindness at a time.
