American Red Cross volunteers responded to the fire that occurred on Pahoa Valley Road in Pahoa early Monday morning that destroyed four apartment residences. Big Island Red Cross volunteers went to the scene to meet with the affected residents and provided assistance with immediate emergency needs.  The Red Cross also set-up a canteen for first responders and displaced residents. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to ensure their immediate needs are met, and to provide referrals to assist with their disaster recovery.

The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation.  Information on developing a family plan is available to the public at www.redcross.org, or a brochure can be requested by calling 734-2101.
