On Thursday, teams of Red Cross volunteers and County employees went door-to-door through K_loa in search of properties that have been impacted by the recent storm. Today, teams continued to canvass neighborhoods in Wailua, Keapana, Anahola, Moloa‘a, Wainiha and H_‘ena.  All Red Cross shelters are now closed, but are on standby to reopen if necessary. 

One additional Oahu Red Cross volunteer deployed to Kauai to help with casework.  Four Oahu Red Cross volunteers were also deployed to Kauai on Monday to help with sheltering and mental health, health services (nurse), and government relations. 

On Oahu, volunteers are continuing to assess the needs of the hardest hit residents and are providing affected residents with recovery information about returning home after a flood, moving forward after a disaster, cleaning up mold and mildew, hints for salvaging items after a flood, and referral information to other community organizations.  Clean up kits are also being distributed, if needed. Caseworkers are following-up with those most affected.

As of Friday, Red Cross damage assessment teams on Oahu have an updated assessment of 4 homes destroyed (36” or more water line in essential living space), 48 with major damage (18” or more water line in essential living space or above electrical outlets), 121 with minor damage (up to 18” water line in essential living space), and 15 homes that have been affected (any water line in crawl space or basement with undamaged essential living space).  These homes are in Niu Valley, Waimanalo, Kailua/Lanikai, Hawaii Kai, Kuliouou, and Aina Haina.  The destroyed homes are in Kuliouou and Aina Haina and most of the homes with major damage are located in the Niu Valley area. 

Mahalo to Wal-Mart for donations of clean-up items like hand sanitizer, bleach, trash bags, gloves, and mosquito repellent for those affected by the floods.

Red Cross disaster assessment, mental health, and logistics volunteers will be at the Disaster Recovery Centers on Oahu from Monday, April 23 to Thursday, April 26.  Along with State and city agencies and non-government organizations, the Hawaii Red Cross will be providing information about available services and assistance.  Here is more information regarding the Disaster Recovery Centers:
