Join the American Red Cross by donating blood and helping save lives in Springfield Friday, April 28. Danyel Pitts was a devoted wife, friend and beloved track coach at Springfield Southeast High School. A kind, honest and caring woman, Danyel passed away from breast cancer in January 2020. During her battle with cancer, she received blood transfusions while undergoing chemotherapy.
Danyel’s husband, Calvin Pitts is a board member for the South Central Illinois chapter of the Red Cross. Calvin understands the importance of giving blood and he invites you to help save lives in Danyel’s memory.

Blood donors who are Black play a critical role in helping people with sickle cell disease, the most common genetic blood disease in the U.S. Patients with the disease may rely on regular blood transfusions throughout their lives to help prevent sickle cell complications, such as organ and tissue damage, severe pain, and strokes.
