Volunteers with our Disaster Action Team responded to four home fires in Freeport and Rockford from February 15 through today.

In the last week, volunteers with the American Red Cross provided a temporary place to stay to 11 individuals, including six adults and five children. In addition, our volunteers provided health services, disaster mental health, financial services, and information about recovery planning to those impacted.

During the winter and as temperatures drop, there is an increase in home fires. Help keep your family safe by following these tips:

• Practice your escape plan: Take time to discuss fire safety with your family until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm and teach them what to do when they hear it when you practice your escape plan.
• Test smoke alarms: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace alarm batteries as needed.
• Avoid matches: Teach your children to tell you or a responsible adult when they find matches or lighters at home or school. Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of reach of children.
