The Red Cross Responds to Five Home Fires in the Past Week
Volunteers with our Red Cross Disaster Action Team have been busy responding to home fires. From November 30 to today, local Red Cross volunteers responded to five home fires, including a fire on Saturday in a multi-unit apartment building in East Moline that displaced 14 residents. The Red Cross is providing temporary emergency lodging to those affected. Our volunteers also provided meals for more than 100 residents of the apartment building on Saturday. The Red Cross Disaster Action Team is also providing residents with health services, disaster mental health support financial assistance and information about recovery planning.
In addition, this past week Red Cross Disaster Action volunteers helped families impacted by home fires in Galesburg, Perry and Rock Island. Volunteers also provided these fire victims a safe place to stay, emotional support and health services for total of 29 individuals including 23 adults and 6 children.
As the weather gets colder, the number of home fires increase. The Red Cross encourages everyone to talk to their children about fire safety to help families stay safe. We want to ensure families and children are prepared. Please talk to everyone in your household about home fire safety, and practice your escape plan together until everyone can get out in two minutes or less.
