Volunteers disaster responders with the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois responded to 28 fires from Monday, July 29 until today in Winnebago, Kankakee, Bourbonnais, DePue, Hanover Park, Mount Harris, Hazel Crest including a fire in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood early this morning that unfortunately resulted in the loss of life.
The Red Cross provided financial assistance, temporary housing, food, clothing and comfort kits with toiletry items, information about recovery services and health and mental health services to the families affected by these fires.
This past week, the Red Cross helped 197 individuals, including 129 adults and 68 children that were affected by fires across Chicago and Northern Illinois.
On Saturday, Red Cross volunteers were on site of a large warehouse fire in Joliet providing support to more than 100 firefighters with food, water, coffee and snacks.
The Red Cross responds to 3 to 4 home fires every day in Northern Illinois. The Red Cross recommends two easy steps to help protect your home and loved ones from a fire: get a smoke alarm and create a fire escape plan.
