As floodwater rapidly rose across central Indiana, families had only hours to make life-changing decisions. For many residents near the White River, evacuation became a matter of safety, leaving homes, possessions, and cherished memories behind.

At the American Red Cross shelter at the Washington Township Service Center and School, in Indianapolis, Indiana, families affected by the flooding found a safe place to stay, access to critical resources and compassionate support as they faced an uncertain future.

For Ralph Chandler and his grandmother, Ramona Chandler, the warnings began Friday afternoon as water levels started climbing near their neighborhood. As conditions worsened, neighbors and family members worked together to move vehicles and prepare for the flooding.

Within just a few hours, the situation became dangerous. Uprooted trees damaged nearby homes and knocked out power. Water levels rose dramatically, eventually making it impossible to leave by vehicle. Because Ramona has several medical needs, the family knew they needed help quickly. Several family members and neighbors were ultimately rescued by boat.

Emergency responders transported Ralph and Ramona to the Red Cross shelter, where Ramona received a medical cot and access to power for her oxygen equipment. They were also reunited with other family members seeking safety. Reflecting on their experience, Ramona expressed gratitude for the care she received.

"They are so friendly. Everyone doted on us and gave us what we needed." Ralph appreciated the shelter's ability to address his family's immediate needs during a difficult and emotional time. "They make us feel comfortable and understand our medical conditions. Our house is destroyed. We don't know when or if we can go back."

As floodwaters recede, many Indiana families are transitioning from emergency response to recovery. The American Red Cross continues to provide shelter, comfort, health services and recovery support to those affected by disasters large and small.
