Community members can make an impact in the lives of patients by donating blood at theannual ‘Just One Unit Blood Drive.’

The blood drive comes at a time when the American Red Cross continues to face a national blood crisis and is urging eligible donors to roll up a sleeve to ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients.

The Just One Unit Blood Drive was inspired by Tracy Fox’s desire to give back after receiving a lifesaving blood transfusion.

In November 2023, Tracy’s life changed following a traffic incident in Washington, D.C. While hospitalized, she developed a life-threatening infection that caused her hemoglobin levels to drop significantly and ultimately required the amputation of her left lower leg. To undergo surgery, Tracy needed a blood transfusion and received one unit of blood, which came from a generous Red Cross blood donor. 

That single unit helped save her life. Today, Tracy honors that gift by encouraging others to donate blood and help save lives through the Just One Unit Blood Drive.

The need for blood is constant. Each day, the American Red Cross needs to collect about 12,500 blood donations to meet the needs of patients at about 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.

 About Blood Donation
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
