The community is invited to donate blood in honor of Tracy Fox at the Just One Unit blood drive on Wednesday, August 27 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Harmony of Avon Baptist Church, 5693 Broyles Road, Avon, IN 46123.
In November 2023, American Red Cross employee and Indiana native Tracy Fox’s life changed following a traffic incident in Washington, D.C. In the hospital, Tracy developed a life-threatening infection. It caused her hemoglobin levels to drop and required the amputation of her left lower leg. To do the surgery, Tracy needed a blood transfusion and received one unit of blood, which came from a generous Red Cross blood donor. To learn more about Tracy and her journey, click here.
Last year, Tracy returned to her hometown of Avon to host a blood drive to support those who need lifesaving blood. Since then, an immense ripple effect of support has occurred. 221 units of blood have been collected, and 100 first-time donors have rolled up a sleeve to donate at blood drives in Avon. One unit of blood helped save Tracy’s life, and now she’s helping save many more.
Someone in the United States – like Tracy – needs a blood transfusion every two seconds, and volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood for those in need. Each day, the American Red Cross needs to collect about 12,500 blood donations to meet the needs of patients at about 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. Tracy is encouraging people to donate blood and hopes others will recognize just one unit of blood can help make a difference.
