The American Red Cross Indiana Region needs blood transportation specialist volunteers to deliver blood products to hospitals in the Greater Fort Wayne area. In 2026, you can give the gift of time and resolve to help people by providing a vital link between blood donors and patients who need blood products.
Volunteers in the blood transportation specialist position have an important assignment and spend a few hours each week that make a big impact on someone’s life. Northeast Chapter Volunteer Jack Bloomfield has been a volunteer for more than 7 years and currently serves as a blood transportation specialist.
"I've got an app that I use, and it tells me which hospital to go to and which products to drop off,” said Jack. “I do that and pick up the empties and go to the next hospital and then the next one until I've finished my route."
Jack first connected with the Red Cross in the 1970s as a servicemember and was inspired to volunteer once he retired. Now, Jack says he’s able to make a difference in his community and help people who need blood.
“It's the feeling that you're doing good, it's like a long blood donation. You feel good about doing that, and I feel good about doing this for four hours,” said Jack.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE? These crucial volunteers will be asked to fill two to four shifts in their region each month, and the assignment usually takes about four hours to complete. Volunteers may be scheduled during the day, in the evening and on weekends.
If you have a valid state driver’s license and at least 3 years of licensed driving experience, you can choose regular routes, stand-by emergency deliveries or both. This is a great volunteer opportunity for couples, friends or family members. Volunteers should be familiar with the area and be able to lift as much as 45 pounds. Training is provided by the Red Cross. Blood transportation specialists can schedule their own hours while helping patients in need.
