The community is invited to donate blood in honor of Karen Mabbott at a blood drive on Saturday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ebb & Flow Yoga Studio located at 206 S. Calumet Road, Suite E, Chesterton, IN 46304.
Karen was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare type of blood and bone marrow cancer, in November 2024 after routine bloodwork at her annual health exam. Since her diagnosis, Karen has received multiple blood and platelets transfusions, made possible thanks to generous blood donors. This month, Karen’s daughter, Gina, is honoring her mother and supporting her journey by hosting a blood drive at her yoga studio.
Karen is a retired nurse and often administered transfusions to patients in need. It never occurred to Karen or her daughter that she would be on the receiving end of blood products.
Cancer patients may need blood products during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications. Blood is so important during their treatment that patients fighting cancer use nearly one quarter of the nation’s blood supply – more than patients fighting any other disease.
