The Indiana Region Red Cross continues to provide shelter, meals, comfort and care to those impacted by severe winter weather. Beginning today, the Red Cross can accommodate pet owners and their dogs and cats at the Lincoln School Shelter. Owners will be responsible for their pets and pet owners must bring their own animal crate, leash, food, bowls, supplies and pet medication.

The Red Cross cannot accommodate pets at the Ohio Township Fire Department shelter location.

With a cold weather advisory in effect through Thursday morning, the Red Cross encourages those without power or a safe place to stay to seek shelter. The National Weather Service reports temperatures could drop to 2 degrees Fahrenheit overnight.

If you or someone you know has been affected by the winter storm, including damage to your home due to fallen frozen trees or limbs, please call 1-800 RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for assistance.

WINTER WEATHER SAFETY Take action now to keep you and your loved ones safe:

• Wear layers of loose clothing, a coat, gloves, hat and water-resistant boots. Use a scarf to cover your face and mouth.
• Stay warm to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes are often the first areas affected. Act fast and get out of the cold immediately if you see signs of hypothermia or frostbite.
  • Signs of frostbite include pain, numbness or a change in skin color.
  • Signs of hypothermia, which can be deadly, often include shivering, confusion, drowsiness and slurred speech.
• If you must use a space heater, never leave it unattended. Place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don’t place it on rugs and carpets, or near bedding and drapes.
• Check on your neighbors, especially elderly people living alone, people with diabetes and children.
• Avoid frozen pipes. Run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air from the rood to get to pipes near sinks.
