Volunteers with the American Red Cross Indiana Region and community partners will be installing free smoke alarms in the Far Eastside community of Indianapolis starting today.

During the Sound the Alarm event, volunteers will meet with community members to share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts, and how to create an escape plan.

This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from corporate partners Allegion, Allied Solutions, and Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

Residents who need assistance can visit soundthealarm.org/indiana to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation year-round.

Home fires claim seven lives every day in the U.S. Most often, these tragedies occur in homes without working smoke alarms. You can take these steps to keep your loved ones safe:

• Test your smoke alarms monthly.
• Practice your two-minute home fire escape plan.
   

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has helped save more than 2,000 lives, including 35 individuals in the Indiana Region since launching in October 2014.
