Volunteers with the American Red Cross Indiana Region and community partners will be installing free smoke alarms in the Far Eastside community of Indianapolis and we need your help!

Our Sound the Alarm event will take place on Friday, May 3 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE), 8902 East 38^th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46226.

“Sound the Alarm is an opportunity to give back to your community by installing smoke alarms and providing lifesaving information to families,” said Leslie Montgomery, regional disaster officer. “I encourage you to join us for this rewarding experience.”

Those interested can visit soundthealarm.org/indiana to create a Red Cross ID and register to volunteer. No prior experience is needed. Training will be provided.

IF YOU NEED A SMOKE ALARM Residents who need assistance can visit soundthealarm.org/indiana to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation year-round. During the home visits, Red Cross volunteers also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan. The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has helped save more than 2,000 lives, including 35 individuals in the Indiana Region since launching in October 2014.

Home fires claim seven lives every day in the U.S. Most often, these tragedies occur in homes without working smoke alarms. You can take these steps to keep your loved ones safe:

• Test your smoke alarms monthly.
• Practice your two-minute home fire escape plan.
