Red Cross members Cliff Garner, Bill Lloyd, Irene Mireles, Debbie Estrada, Deborah McGlohan, Ricardo Diaz, Barbara Martin and Janis Parker along with virtual participants Randy Vance and Renee Breezley attended a Shelter Training meeting at the Oklahoma City office. The Red Cross responds to a disaster every eight minutes, and our volunteers are always ready to help those in need. The shelter creation process was discussed in detail with discussion about updating our shelter location database for our area. The Red Cross and other organizations have pre-identified thousands of potential
shelter locations across the U.S. that are ready to open within hours of a disaster.
Members volunteered to participate in calling or emailing clients to set up appointments to have their locations surveyed, volunteered to go to the client location to do shelter site surveys and volunteered to assist in the inputting of this data into the NSS Sheltering System. Red Cross is one of the few volunteer organizations that prepare in advance for assisting communities that are affected by natural or man-made disasters!
Red Cross warehouses are stocked with millions of disaster relief supplies items, such as cots, blankets, hygiene kits and cleaning products. We coordinate with local organizations in communities that provide disaster aid. We often support these local organizations with expertise and supplies.
