American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces is providing comfort, care and a warm welcome home for 1st Infantry Division soldiers returning home from deployment to Europe.
The 1st Sustainment Brigade started redeployment operations at Fort Riley on Oct. 10. Family, friends and fellow soldiers welcomed back the Division Special Troops Battalion and Alpha Company, 541st Division Sustainment Support Battalion.
While families eagerly awaited the arrival of their loved ones, Red Cross volunteers were on hand at the redeployment venue. They offered refreshments, snacks and family-friendly activities to help make the homecoming experience more comfortable and memorable.
In addition, single soldiers received welcome bags filled with snacks as they boarded transportation to their barracks, a small gesture recognizing their service and sacrifice.
Volunteers Amber Chambliss, accompanied by her children Dean and Livie, and Ivana Radovanovic, both military spouses, dedicated their time to supporting soldiers and families during this significant milestone.
Their presence reflects the Red Cross commitment to standing alongside service members and their loved ones during every stage of military life.
“It’s an honor to be a part of such a special moment in so many military families’ lives. We truly enjoy being able to support our community and lend a hand when we can,” Chambliss said. “I believe it’s important to teach my children how to give back to others and volunteering with the Red Cross is a gratifying way to include them.”
Redeployment support requires flexibility and dedication from volunteers, as flight schedules frequently change with little notice. Despite these challenges, Red Cross volunteers continue to answer the call, ensuring soldiers and families receive the support they need during reunions that often mark the end of many months apart.
For those interested in serving military members and their families, redeployment operations are unique opportunities to make a lasting impact while honoring the sacrifices of our nation's heroes.
With additional events expected at Fort Riley through February 2027, the American Red Cross invites community members to join its mission in support of Big Red One soldiers. Volunteers play a vital role in creating meaningful homecoming experiences and strengthening the connection between military families and the communities that support them.
