Volunteer Richard Powell was honored with a 2025 Terry Brewster Community Volunteer All-Star Award for his tireless disaster response work with the American Red Cross.
Powell has been an active blood donor for many decades, donating over 14+ gallons. Now as a Volunteer External Relations/Government Operations Manager, he responds to natural and manmade disasters across the United States. He manages responding Red Cross workers in hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, and flooding disasters. His most memorable assignments include Florida Hurricane Ian, the Maui wildfires, back-to-back tornadoes and floods in Kentucky earlier in 2025, and the tragic DC airplane crash whose flight originated in Wichita. Retired from a lengthy law enforcement career, Richard has continued to utilize a great deal of his prior training and knowledge while supporting those in their time of need.
The award is as uniquely Wichitan as Powell: crafted from an actual airplane window, it evokes the city’s status as Air Capital of the World and symbolizes the “heights to which community spirit can soar.” The award was established to honor the memory and legacy of Terry Brewster, a dedicated supporter and former board member of the NBC. The award recognizes outstanding volunteers from community organizations and non-profits, continuing Terry’s tradition of supporting those who generously donate their time, talents, and resources to uplift others.
Honorees also receive four complementary tickets to a National Baseball Congress World Series game, where their service is recognized with a ceremony on the field.
