When his daughter was born, the Red Cross helped David Hicks get home from an Army base to be with his wife. 47 years later, he’s celebrating his 190th blood drive as a Red Cross volunteer Blood Program Leader.
"Dave has dedicated numerous hours to supporting blood drives," said KerrieAnn Jack, Donor Services Executive for the Massachusetts blood region. "He personally calls donors and always asks the names of both the team lead and driver of each blood drive so he can personally welcome them."
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Tewksbury, Dave organizes regular blood drives at the Wamesit Lodge. These blood drives have collected more than 7,000 units of blood since 2020.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Cross was challenged to find locations that could accommodate the extra space and safety requirements dictated by COVID protocols.
Dave is also a blood donor who gives regularly, and encourages others to do the same, because every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood.
