DETROIT (Nov. 9, 2023) – For many, watching the classic holiday movie “Elf” has been a heartwarming tradition for years. As the holiday season approaches, the American Red Cross is encouraging people to begin another tradition by giving blood.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Elf” and spread holiday cheer, donors who give blood Nov. 10-30 will receive an exclusive pair of “Elf” + Red Cross socks, while supplies last. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org/Elf.
Donations are critical to the blood supply during the holidays – a time when blood donations often decline. Donors of all blood types are needed, especially platelet donors and type O donors.
The Red Cross offers three ways to make an appointment to donate at your convenience:
• Download the Red Cross Blood Donor App
• Go to RedCrossBlood.org
• Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767)
Blood drives are scheduled throughout the state, including in Adrian, Ann Arbor, Clinton Township, Holland, Flint, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Muskegon, Rochester, St. Clair and Troy.
The Red Cross reminds donors that they can give blood after receiving a flu shot, provided they are feeling well and are symptom-free on the day of their donation appointment. Likewise, there is no deferral or wait time after receiving the updated COVID-19 vaccination.
How to donate blood
A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.
