LANSING (Feb. 6, 2023) – The Big 10 Blood Battle is on at Michigan State University this week in East Lansing. The American Red Cross Michigan Region is inviting the community to roll up a sleeve and donate blood from 11 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8th, at Spartan Stadium.
Red Cross Michigan is hosting blood drives across Michigan as a part of the Big 10 Blood Battle through Feb. 22. The friendly competition challenges four Big 10 universities – University of Michigan, Michigan State, University of Wisconsin and Penn State – to see who can collect the most blood donations.
The Big 10 Blood Battle is going on amid threats from inclement winter weather and seasonal illnesses that can make it hard for donors to keep appointments. It is a wonderful way to show school spirit and help save lives at the same time, said Judi Harris, Executive Director of the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross Michigan region.
“Whether you are a current donor or looking to donate for the first time, you are engaging in a truly selfless act,” Harris said.
To schedule an appointment visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS and use sponsor code MSUAthletics. You can also find a list of all the drives through Feb. 22 at RedCrossBlood.org.
Appointments are preferred but walks-in are welcome, said Scot Dinsmor, Red Cross blood account manager for Mid-Michigan.
“Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood,” Dinsmor said. “When you roll up a sleeve to donate, you help change a life.”
