NORTHERN MICHIGAN (April 23, 2026) – The American Red Cross has an urgent need for volunteers to support its disaster relief operation covering more than 50 communities impacted by recentflooding and storms across the state. 

Volunteers will assist with damage assessment and distributing relief supplies. Positions are open to anyone 18 years and older. If interested, visit redcross.org/volunteer. Enter your zip code and it will take you to a page displaying the Michigan disaster event to register. 

Currently, 60 Red Cross disaster workers are supporting the disaster operation, now in its ninth day.

Here are the latest updates about the operation:        

• Anyone who is impacted by the recent flooding and storms can call 1-800-RED CROSS.         
• All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.        
• Red Cross volunteers continue to perform residential damage assessments in areas recently affected by flooding and storms. This work will enable the Red Cross to better understand what help residents may need in the days and weeks ahead. Assessments have been done at 320 dwellings, of which 38 were destroyed or suffered major damage.        
• Red Cross volunteers have distributed 220 relief items including cleanup kits consisting of cleaner, bucket, mop, sponge, garbage bags and gloves.        
• With the help of partners, more than 900 meals and snacks have been provided.       
• Anyone who needs a safe place to stay or a warm
  meal can find shelter information on redcross.org, the free Red Cross Emergency app, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).        
• Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or citizenship status. Since shelters were opened, the Red Cross and its partners have provided 89 overnight stays for more than 70 residents.        
• Help people affected by disasters big and small by making a gift to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to, and help people recover from disasters big and small, whenever and wherever they occur across the country. Flood Safety Tips       

• Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Just 6 inches of fast-moving floodwater can knock you over and 12 inches can carry your vehicle away.        
• Avoid fallen power lines, poles and wire. They can electrocute you.        
• Watch out for falling trees and other debris.        
• Flooding can contaminate drinking water. Check with your local public health department.       
• Stay away from floodwaters. They can contain sewage, sharp items, and chemicals that can make you ill.
