Amanda Chaffin is so grateful for the weather alert app on her cell phone that she credits with her still being around to talk about how a tornado damaged the mobile home where she and her husband lived in Springdale, Arkansas.
They were asleep when the app started warning of impending danger.
“We had never heard that warning before. It was so loud that it woke us up,” she said. “We didn’t have time to think, only had time to move quickly. We knew something big was happening.”
Shortly after fleeing their home, the tornado uprooted a large tree that fell on top of their home.
“We were so lucky. We lost the back end of the house, but we managed to get out just in time,” she said.
When American Red Cross caseworkers Linda Morgan and Misty Sutton showed up, they offered assistance which was a pleasant surprise for Amanda.
“This is a really small town and we didn’t expect anybody to come and help. We really appreciate the Red Cross coming out to help not only us but everybody that was impacted,” Amanda said.
