The American Red Cross helps meet the constant demand for blood by providing about 40% of the nation’s blood supply — more than any other blood bank in the U.S. Our Minnesota and Dakotas Region plays a vital role in this work, distributing lifesaving blood locally while also sending blood to other parts of the country where there are critical needs.
As the nation’s leader in blood collection, we see a growing need for blood. In order to support our aging demographic, provide relief for an increasing number of cancer patients, and ensure type-specific match availability for a diversifying population, we must increase our capacity to collect blood.
The American Red Cross is committed to meeting this challenge, and is opening 100 new blood donation centers across the country by 2030, including one in Blaine, MN.
Gail Ness, a dedicated volunteer Blood Drive Ambassador for the Red Cross Minnesota and Dakotas Region, has made it her mission to inspire others to donate blood—a cause close to her heart. Her journey began over two decades ago, rooted in a profound love for her family.
Twenty-six years ago, Gail’s eldest son, Derek, was born prematurely, weighing just over three pounds. During his fragile early days, a blood transfusion became a turning point, helping him grow stronger and more alert. That experience left an indelible mark on Gail, sparking her lifelong commitment to blood donation. Read more about Gail’s story here.
"I am so excited for this opportunity to expand our community presence here in the Twin Cities! Minnesota is a critical part of the national blood network at the Red Cross and our new Blaine Blood Donation Center builds on our work to ensure that our neighbors, friends and loved ones receive lifesaving blood and blood products when they need it. Knowing that in one hour you could save a life at our new blood donation center is amazing!”
