Days after torrential rains caused brooks and creeks in Central New Jersey to overflow and flood numerous towns, American Red Cross volunteers continue to bring comfort and support to their neighbors. Volunteers are out in flood-ravaged communities assessing the damage and providing emergency relief items like clean-up kits, food, and water to help people who are coping with flooded homes.
As of July 17, the Red Cross New Jersey Region had opened 2 temporary shelters, providing people with a place to seek refuge after the flooding. Throughout flood-impacted communities like Green Brook, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Scotch Plains and Dunellen, more than 2,400 meals and snacks have been provided thus far and 1,300 emergency relief items, including clean-up kits and other supplies, have been distributed to people in need. To date, these relief operations have helped hundreds of affected households and have been supported by more than 80 trained Red Cross disaster workers.
Red Cross volunteers have also been manning fixed distribution sites in Dunellen, Plainfield, and Scotch Plains, where people who were affected by the flooding could pick up clean-up kits, other relief items like water and snacks, and learn about Red Cross services.
