Several neighborhoods in Penns Grove were flooded
A Penns Grove resident stops by the shelter to pick up cleaning supplies
On Friday evening, October 29, strong winds and heavy rainfall caused flooding in parts of Salem County, especially in the borough of Penns Grove, New Jersey.
The Red Cross, working together with local officials, opened a shelter for those affected by the flooding who may need a place to stay. The shelter, located in Davidow Hall at Salem Community College in Carneys Point, was opened on Saturday.
A team was dispatched for Disaster Assessment on Saturday to pinpoint locations and determine how many households may be affected and to what extent.
Using the information gained during the disaster assessment, teams of Red Cross disaster workers went door-to-door delivering cleaning supplies in affected neighborhoods. On Sunday, October 31, the volunteer teams distributed 315 Clean Up Kits to residents in Penns Grove.
The shelter had no occupants as of Sunday afternoon and was closed. The Red Cross appreciates community partners like Salem Community College, who open their doors to house our shelters and welcome their neighbors in need.
