The American Red Cross, in partnership with Erie Insurance, hosted a Sound the Alarm Free Smoke Alarm Installation Event as part of its ongoing Home Fire Campaign on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Throughout the day roughly 60 volunteers went door-to-door in Center City Erie to educate residents on the importance of having and practicing home fire escape plans and to install free smoke alarms where none existed or where existing one had failed. By the end of the event, the group had installed 259 smoke alarms in 85 area homes.
“All too often we hear of people who perish in home fires,” noted Pam Masi, Red Cross Northwestern Pennsylvania Executive Director. “Having a working smoke alarm can increase your chances of making it to safety by over 50%. The service our volunteers provided during the event here today has the potential to save lives.”
The event was a huge success thanks to the tremendous support of our community partners – Erie Insurance, ServErie, Maple Donuts, Erie County Farms, Penn State Behrend, and Bayfront Eastside Taskforce.
Masi added, “We are so very fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers, who are willing to take time out of their busy schedules to improve the lives of others in our community. Due to their efforts, the Red Cross is able to help people to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters big and small.”
