Jorge Martinez, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania, volunteered to give blood at a meaningful event just outside of Pittsburgh on June 15, 2023. Martinez visited a blood drive held in memory of 13-year-old Nichole Hogan, of North Braddock, who passed away in January 2022. The teenager was suffering from a headache when she went to the hospital around Christmas. She was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away one week later.

“It’s really inspiring how the community has come together for Nichole. Her memory will last forever,” Martinez said. “For years to come, lives will be saved because of Nichole.”

This was the second year Nichole’s family hosted a blood drive in her memory. They hope to continue the tradition for many years to come.

“We’re very humbled and grateful to be part of this event in this wonderful community,” Martinez said.

At the blood drive, Nichole’s family was brought to tears when Allegheny County Councilmember Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis presented them with a proclamation, officially declaring June 15, 2023, as “Nichole Hogan Day” in Allegheny County.

“Blood symbolizes life,” Lisa Franklin-Robinson, President of the North Braddock Borough Council, said. “Through the blood donations collected here today, Nichole will represent so much to so many people who never got a chance to see her pretty face, but they will know her name.”

“I just couldn’t be more thankful for this village,” Nicole Glaze, Nichole’s grandmother, said.
