Precious cargo rides with Jay Truxal as he drives through the hills of western Pennsylvania. In his volunteer role as a Blood Transportation Specialist, he carries something more valuable than gold: blood products that will help save lives at local hospitals.

"I've been a blood donor my entire adult life," Jay said.

Jay discovered his new calling through a spontaneous visit to his local Red Cross office in Greensburg. After raising his family and retiring from his career, Jay was seeking a new purpose in his life. He found that when he pulled into the Chestnut Ridge and Allegheny Mountains Chapter parking lot one day and went inside to ask about volunteer opportunities.

As a Blood Transportation Specialist, Jay serves as the critical link between blood donors and patients in need. He drives blood products from the Red Cross Blood and Platelet Donation Center in Johnstown to hospitals in Greensburg and Latrobe, ensuring they receive their lifesaving deliveries on time. The position offers him the independence and the flexibility to choose his routes and delivery schedule.

"The people at the Red Cross are great and the facility is a fascinating place," Jay said.

Jay's commitment to community service doesn't stop there. When he's not transporting blood products, he participates in Red Cross Sound the Alarm events, installing free smoke alarms and helping families create emergency escape plans. Together with his wife, he also volunteers at the local food pantry and the Greensburg Palace Theater.
