Make an Appointment for a Home Fire Safety Visit in Greater Providence

The American Red Cross asks everyone to help Sound the Alarm in Greater Providence and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.

Here in Greater Providence the Red Cross Rhode Island is holding a Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event on Saturday, September 23 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Red Cross volunteers and local partners will be canvassing neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms, replacing batteries in existing alarms and helping families create escape plans. Participating partners working with the Red Cross include local fire departments, municipalities, community and faith-based organizations.

The Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event in Rhode Island is made possible through the generous support of companies like National Grid and Amica Insurance.

The Red Cross and partners will be in the following communities on September 23, making free home fire safety visits: Central Falls, Cranston, Pawtucket, Providence and Warwick. To make an appointment, visit soundthealarm.org/rhodeisland or call 1-877-287-3327 and choose option 1.

“Over the last 12 months, the Rhode Island Red Cross has responded to more than 300 home fires. In fact home fires are the biggest disaster threat our community faces, killing seven people in this country every day,” said Susan Roberts, Executive Director, American Red Cross Rhode Island. “Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.”

The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.

Across the country, the Campaign is making a difference. As of May 31, 2017, the Red Cross and our partners across the country have saved at least 260 lives: reached around 860,000 through youth preparedness programs, and installed 890,000 free smoke alarms.
