PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 22, 2025) – The American Red Cross in Rhode Island is urgently calling on compassionate individuals to step up and make a difference by joining its Disaster Action Team (DAT). As home fires – the most common disaster in the United States – continue to devastate families across the state, the need for volunteers to provide immediate support during these crises has never been greater.
“It’s critical to have a trained, ready volunteer workforce to make sure we can provide disaster relief at a moment’s notice,” said Susan Roberts, Executive Director, American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter. “Join our team and bring comfort, care, and hope to those facing their darkest hours.”
Home fires are most common in the winter, with December and January being the peak months. Since December 1, 2024, the Red Cross has responded to 27 home fires, assisting nearly 200 people across Rhode Island. Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to these emergencies 24/7, offering immediate assistance such as a place to stay, comfort kits, emotional support and connections to recovery resources.
JOIN US The Red Cross will host an open house at the Rhode Island Chapter in Providence (100 Niantic Ave.) on Thursday, January 30 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you're a first-time volunteer, a returning volunteer, or simply looking to learn more.
