Story told by Amy Thomas, American Red Cross volunteer
On December 3, 2022, the Harley Davidson community of Myrtle Beach came together for their 13th annual Toy Run Ride, benefiting the local community and the American Red Cross of South Carolina. Raising almost $6,986 for the Eastern SC Chapter of the Red Cross and donating hundreds of toys for local children.
“Every year, we give back to the local Red Cross, an organization that is near and dear to our hearts. The money we raise stays here in Horry County and helps the children of Horry County,” said Jenn DeLuca, Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson Coordinator. “As you can see, we have an exuberant turnout year after year; hundreds of riders come out. It’s all in the name of fun but also raising funds for a good cause.”
More than 600 participants joined this year’s ride, hosted by the Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson store. The entire day was a festive celebration that brought together a tight-knit community for the singular purpose of providing a joyous holiday for local children.
American Red Cross volunteers from the Eastern Chapter supported the event by providing collection and transportation for the donated toys.
“Looking out at this crowd is what makes us do it each year. They show up with Santa hats on, dressed like elves, and we end up raising thousands of dollars for the Red Cross and truckloads of toys,” DeLuca proudly described what makes this event so special and the atmosphere electric.
When asked why they show up year after year, the riders agreed that they do this to support the children and have fun. From the International Red Knights to the Axe Men, a professional firefighters' motorcycle club in South Carolina, and the Christian Motorcycle Association, who provided the refreshments for riders and volunteers, the clubs present were thrilled to be there and riding for a good cause.
