SOUTH CAROLINA, June 20, 2023 – Four disaster-trained volunteers from the American Red Cross of South Carolina, including one volunteer from the Lowcountry, are deploying to support disaster relief operations in Oklahoma after storms and tornadoes heavily impacted the area over the weekend.
“It is my honor to go help the people of Oklahoma after the storms and tornadoes,” said William Hurtes, a Red Cross of South Carolina volunteer from the Lowcountry Chapter. “I’m looking forward to working with our partners to do whatever I can to help alleviate human suffering.”
Dangerous weather swept across a wide swath of the South and Midwest over the weekend in Arkansas, Florida, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas, prompting power outages, downed trees, road closures, flash flooding and more. Red Cross disaster teams are responding across several states, providing emergency shelter, relief supplies, food, water, comfort and care. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,000 people are seeking emergency shelter in nearly 50 shelters spread across eight states and territories.
The American Red Cross of South Carolina stands ready to send additional disaster workers as requested.
