Disaster-trained volunteers with the American Red Cross of South Carolina are helping roughly 20 people after an apartment fire along Fairwind Drive in North Charleston Tuesday morning. More than a half dozen units were damaged.
Red Cross of South Carolina Disaster team members responded, both in-person and virtually, to provide comfort kits, containing personal hygiene items, and financial assistance for immediate needs to the families impacted.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this morning’s large fire and the Red Cross of South Carolina remains committed to helping them recover amid this COVID19 pandemic,” said Ashley Henyan, the Executive Director of the Lowcountry Chapter. “Today kicked off National Preparedness month and this is an unfortunate reminder that fires can happen anywhere, at any time. It is important for families to prepare for home fires by creating a family escape plan and test their smoke alarms every month. We remain committed to supporting our communities while keeping our team and those we serve, safe.”
In addition to immediate needs, Red Cross team members are providing virtual mental and spiritual care assistance to anyone that may need it. The Red Cross will continue to stay in contact with its partners to see if any additional assistance is needed.
