Today we’re honored to spotlight Quincy Jones, a committed American Red Cross board member whose leadership, experiences and passion for community uplift continue to make a meaningful impact across the Greater Texas Chapter.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Quincy spent most of his childhood in Philadelphia before returning to San Antonio for high school and later serving in the U.S military. Throughout his time in the military, he often utilized the Red Cross in times of need and felt a strong affinity towards the organization. When a friend who was a Red Cross board member encouraged him to apply, Quincy stepped and has now served proudly on the board for two years.
For Quincy, serving on the Red Cross board is an extension of the values he lives every day: giving back, supporting underserved communities, and leading with empathy. He believes that everyone working with the Red Cross must embrace compassion at their core. He shared, “You have to know how to show sympathy and empathy, and serve people with dignity, respect, and care.” He says that in the community, if your actions match your words, you develop trust within the community.
When asked how organizations like the Red Cross can continue uplifting diverse voices, Quincy’s answer was clear; representation! He emphasized the importance of leaders who reflect the communities served, who create pathways for opportunity through mentorship, who invest in education, and who offer a “shining light” during people's hardest moments.
He then explained that representation is also what inspires and empowers future leaders. He gave examples such as his own senior military leaders, who mentored him and expanded his worldview. One of his most impactful chapters of his life came during his time in the service when he worked under Presidents George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Talking with Obama on a daily basis, Quincy found inspiration in witnessing history and in asking questions that helped shape the leader he is today. “I've always been empathetic,” he said. “But through mentorship, I learned how to pass that empathy onto others.”
Quincy says he loves values the Red Cross stands for, and he feels a deep sense of belonging in his role. “It’s knowing that where you are is where you’re meant to be. It’s been such a positive experience.” He continues to encourage his friends and family to get involved with the Red Cross, just as he was encouraged years ago. “Everyone who comes to us has a need. When we truly listen, we can understand how to help.” For Quincy, listening is not only a skill but a transformative act that builds trust, strengthens communities and fuels better service.
Regarding Black History Month, it holds a deep personal meaning for Quincy Jones. He says it's a time to consider the achievements of his ancestors, to celebrate Black excellence and creativity, to appreciate the progress made, and acknowledge the work still ahead.
“It’s a time to reflect on my own story, allowing me to realize where I’ve come from and where those before me came from,” he says.
He sees Black History Month as a vital part of American history, offering opportunities for learning, unity and strengthening the community.
