In the weeks following the remnants of Typhoon Halong, which brought destructive winds, flooding, and widespread power outages to communities across coastal Alaska, the American Red Cross of Alaska has been humbled by the extraordinary generosity and compassion shown by neighbors, donors, and community partners.
As families faced displacement, damage to homes, and uncertainty about the future, Alaskans stepped up—offering shelter, supplies, donations, and countless hours of volunteer service. This outpouring of support has been instrumental in helping the Red Cross deliver critical aid to those most affected.
“Our hearts go out to every family impacted by this storm,” said Tanguy Libbrecht, CEO of the American Red Cross of Alaska. “Due to the incredibly generous nature of our donors, community members and partners, we have been able to mobilize 200+ volunteers from across the country to provide comfort and care for so many wonderful Alaskan families impacted by this incredibly destructive Typhoon. Due to this support, we have been able to provide resources and hope to hundreds of Alaskans.”
Beyond taking care of the immediate needs of those impacted by these storms, community partners stepped up in a big way to ensure that the residents evacuated from Kipnuk, Kwigillingok, and Nightmute felt welcomed into their temporary new community. Partners like the Anchorage Wolverines donated season tickets to every family staying in our shelter, Providence Hospital donated a large office space to host the disaster response headquarters, the Anchorage Railroad donated a train ride to help evacuees experience Southcentral Alaska beyond the shelters and hotel rooms, community members donated traditional foods that were shared at potlucks and community gatherings, and the list continues to grow.
Thanks to the kindness of donors and the strength of local partnerships, the Red Cross has been able to:
From tribal organizations and local businesses to faith groups and individual volunteers, the response has been a powerful reminder of the spirit of Alaska—resilient, generous, and deeply connected.
“We could not serve our mission without the tremendous support of our partners,” added Tanguy Libbrecht. “In this beautiful and vast state, we must mobilize and harness the power of all our partners to accomplish our mission of preventing and alleviating suffering and guide families towards recovery.”
The Red Cross of Alaska remains committed to standing alongside communities as recovery continues. Every donation, every act of kindness, and every volunteer hour has made a tangible difference—and continues to bring hope to those who need it most.
