Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Age varies from students to retirees. Backgrounds and interests can be in any field. A variety of opportunities means there is a place for you! Some examples of volunteer positions include: disaster response, community disaster education, business outreach, graphic design, fundraising, and international services. The American Red Cross of Alaska offices are generally open during normal business hours (9a- 5p). Volunteers are needed for support during these hours. Occasionally, special events are held during night and weekends, and we encourage volunteers to take advantage of these opportunities. We suggest you choose a volunteer opportunity, contact the staff lead, and coordinate accordingly as to scheduling of service hours.

All volunteers are welcome at the American Red Cross of Alaska. If you are under the age of 18, we do require a parent or guardian’s signature before you volunteer with us. Youth and Young Adults (up to age 24) are encouraged to view our Youth Zone to find out how they can help.

We appreciate knowing when our volunteers will be coming in to our office. If we know your schedule, we can have projects ready for you and best utilize your time and talents. Each volunteer position has a different time requirement. Work with the appropriate staff contact to figure out what is best for both of you.

Once you have found out more information about our organization and the opportunities we offer, we invite you to come in and talk to us about your service requirement. You will still need to go through the Volunteer process, so follow the steps to getting yourself into the system. When you find a suitable project, our Volunteer Manager will work with you to fill out the necessary paperwork and get you started.

Once you have completed the steps listed in “How do I become a volunteer?”, you will be ready to volunteer! The process can take up to a month to get started since you need to sign up for a Volunteer Orientation before you begin volunteering. It is your responsibility to contact us early enough to complete your service in a timely manner.

All volunteers are required to take a Red Cross Volunteer Orientation. Many of our other positions do require training, most of which are free or offered at-cost to volunteers. The rich and varied training opportunities with the American Red Cross of Alaska are just one benefit of volunteering with our organization.
