Annually, the American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters. Across Arkansas, Red Cross responds to more than 1,500 disasters. The majority of responses nationally and locally is residential fires. Disaster responders assist Arkansans an average of four times every day and night after a home fire. The state is consistently in the top five nationally in the number of fires, and in the top three of the Federal Emergency Management Agencies (FEMA) High Fire Fatality List. In addition to fires, responders provide immediate emergency care after weather related disasters including storms, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and man-made incidents such as explosions, hazardous material spills and search and rescue operations. The call for help is responded to 24 hours a day, weekends and holidays.
