ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As Winter Storm Fern approaches, the American Red Cross is working closely with local emergency management officials to ensure communities are prepared and supported throughout the severe weather event. Red Cross teams are on standby and ready to respond should people need shelter, emergency assistance, or other vital services.

Red Cross volunteers and staff are in coordination with city, county, and state partners to monitor forecasts and community needs as Fern moves through the region. The organization’s readiness posture includes logistical support for shelters, disaster communications, and relief supplies.

WINTER SAFETY AND PREPAREDNESS

Winter storms can bring extreme cold, heavy snow, ice, high winds, and dangerous travel conditions. Preparing ahead of time helps protect lives and property. The Red Cross offers comprehensive winter storm safety guidance, including ways families can prepare before, during, and after severe weather:

Before a Winter Storm:

• Stay informed about weather forecasts and alerts; understand terms like Winter Storm Watch and Winter Storm Warning.
• Prepare your home to stay warm — seal drafts, check heating systems, and plan to stay indoors.
• Assemble emergency supplies, including food, water, medications, warm clothing, blankets, and batteries.
• Create both a Stay-at-Home kit with at least two weeks of supplies and a portable Go-Kit with at least three days of essentials.
• Have an emergency plan for relatives, pets, and neighbors who may need assistance.

During a Winter Storm:

• Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible.
• Use safe heating sources; operate generators and outdoor heating devices only outside and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, and seek medical care if needed.

If You Must Travel:

• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes warm clothing, blankets, water, and a charged cell phone.
• Let someone know your route and expected arrival time.

After the storm, continue to use caution on icy roads and around downed power lines, and check in with loved ones to ensure everyone’s safety.
