TEMPE, Ariz. — The American Red Cross is partnering with the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix and Valle del Sol to conduct door-to-door outreach aimed at helping community members stay safe during extreme heat. Volunteers will visit neighborhoods to check on residents, share life-saving heat safety tips, and connect families with local resources available throughout the summer months.
“Extreme heat is the most deadly disaster we respond to,” said Edgar R. Olivo, CEO of the American Red Cross Arizona and New Mexico Region. “Preparation cannot wait until temperatures rise. In the same way Red Cross teams in Florida prepare year-round for hurricanes, we are starting now to help communities understand the risks of extreme heat and how to stay safe before summer arrives.”
This partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix and Valle del Sol is part of a broader, year-round approach to addressing extreme heat, bringing together agencies across the Phoenix metro area to ensure communities are informed, prepared, and supported before summer temperatures arrive. By starting early, partners are able to coordinate resources, strengthen outreach efforts, and reach vulnerable populations with life-saving information before the summer.
“We are strengthening this partnership with the Red Cross and Valle del Sol to bring preventive information, local resources, and warm referrals directly to neighborhoods,” said Guadalupe Elizabeth Jiménez Rivera, Consul of Community and Cultural Affairs. “Our work is rooted in being present, listening, and walking alongside the community—especially older adults and families most vulnerable to extreme heat. By coordinating volunteers, routes, and resources with a place-based approach, we ensure life-saving information reaches those who need it most, before extreme temperatures become a daily risk.”
Not only will educational materials and resources be distributed on the day, but Valle del Sol will also be providing their mobile clinic as part of a holistic approach to ensuring people have the resources needed to create resilient communities.
