During an emergency evacuation, one of the most important things a family can know is that they have a safe place to go. Whether displaced by an apartment fire, transportation incident, wildfire or other disaster, people need a secure place to rest and access support while they navigate the next steps.
That’s why the American Red Cross relies on community partners, including churches and faith-based organizations, to help provide emergency shelter when disasters strike. While the Red Cross supplies trained volunteers, resources and support services, trusted local facilities are essential to ensuring communities are prepared to care for their neighbors in times of crisis.
“Opening their doors to the Red Cross is an act of leadership and a powerful example of service to the community,” said Amanda Martin, Community Program Manager for the North Central Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross. “In rural areas especially, it’s imperative that faith-based organizations step up and welcome us in. Many communities don’t have access to community centers or government buildings, so these partnerships are essential to ensuring people have a safe place to go when they need help most.”
One such partner is Pine Grove Baptist Church, which has committed to serving as a shelter location during emergency evacuations. Associate Pastor John Bongiovanni said the decision reflects the church’s dedication to supporting the broader community.
“It will for sure show how our church cares about all the people in the surrounding communities,” said Bongiovanni. “The worst feeling is to have a real need to be met, and there are no options.”
The church can accommodate approximately 200 to 300 people and can be prepared to open its doors on short notice when evacuation needs arise.
By working together and strengthening local shelter networks, the Red Cross and community partners like Pine Grove Baptist Church are helping ensure families have a safe place to turn during some of life’s most uncertain moments.
