For Nancy Dile, a life of service didn’t end at retirement—it simply took on a new form.
Originally from Pennsylvania and now a long-time Florida resident, Nancy dedicated 22 years as a firefighter with the City of Dunedin. After retiring, she continued her commitment to helping others by joining the American Red Cross, where she has volunteered for the past five years.
In that time, Nancy has supported her community in many ways—from teaching fire safety education and installing smoke alarms to deploying across the country to assist with disaster relief efforts.
Within just one year of volunteering, Nancy answered the call to her first major disaster operation, deploying ahead of Hurricane Ian’s landfall in Fort Myers.
“I saw the devastation that could have been my neighborhood,” she said. “When you drive mile after mile of people’s lives parked out by the curb waiting for the garbage trucks to take it away, it really hits you hard.”
That experience only deepened her commitment.
Since then, Nancy has deployed to five disaster relief operations, often dedicating weeks at a time to help communities recover. Most recently, she traveled to Western Washington to support residents impacted by severe flooding—helping prepare meals, load emergency vehicles, and deliver food directly to families in need.

“It reminds us that there’s a lot of kindness still in the world,” she said. “I can go to sleep at night knowing that I’ve helped someone else.”
Back home in Tampa Bay, Nancy serves as a Disaster Action Team supervisor, leading volunteers who provide immediate, around-the-clock assistance to families impacted by emergencies like home fires. From securing shelter to offering emotional support, she helps ensure no one faces a crisis alone.
Whether responding to disasters across the country or helping neighbors here at home, Nancy’s mission remains constant.
“I believe in the Red Cross mission,” she said. “It feels good to support the recovery for families who, in some cases, have lost everything.”
Nancy continues to make a difference for communities across North and Central Florida—and beyond.
