The American Red Cross of Hawaii honored their Heroes of the Year during the Red Cross Centennial Heroes Breakfast on March 4, 2017, at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.  The kind, courageous, and selfless deeds of these heroes are directly linked to the Red Cross mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering.  This year’s Centennial Heroes Breakfast included special Centennial Heroes, Alfred L. Castle, known as the “founder” of the Hawaii Red Cross (grandson Al Castle accepting on his behalf) and LeBurta Atherton, a WWII gray lady volunteer, who is turning 100 years old along with the Hawaii Red Cross.  

Volunteers of the Year Heroes: 

Oahu – Kerri Scott (accepted by Preparedness Manager, Carole Kaapu)

Maui – Elaine Olson

Big Island – Anthony Colombo

Kauai – Bob Robertson (accepted by daughter, Nora Robertson)

Community Heroes:

Special Recognition Hero – Ken Lee (posthumously)

Animal Hero – Maggie Edwards

Centennial Hero – Alfred L. Castle (accepted by grandson, Alfred L. Castle)

Centennial Hero – LeBurta Atherton
