Red Cross volunteer Magnolia Chiri Garcia (center) with members of the Red Cross – Greater New York and the Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.
During National CPR + AED Awareness Week (June 1-7) and throughout the year, the American Red Cross encourages people to enroll in CPR and AED training. Course participants learn several skills including what to do if someone is in cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time without warning. It’s important to be ready to take action, from calling 911 to starting chest compressions to using an AED.
Red Cross Greater New York Region volunteer Magnolia Chiri Garcia has always enjoyed helping others. Trained in CPR at 14 years old, she is now an EMT certified in Red Cross Basic Life Support. She was at the doctor’s office when alerted by an app that help was needed nearby for a man in cardiac arrest. Magnolia dashed to the location and performed CPR for approximately five minutes until the police and EMS arrived. Thanks to Magnolia’s quick actions, the man was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Magnolia was awarded a Red Cross Certificate of Merit – the highest award given to those who have used the
knowledge and skills they learned in a Red Cross training course to help save or sustain a life.
