The American Red Cross of Illinois is proud to announce that Jeannie Gardner has joined the organization as the new Regional Disaster Officer, bringing with her extensive leadership and emergency management experience at the local, regional, and federal levels.
In her new role, Gardner will oversee disaster preparedness, response, and recovery operations across the Illinois Region, guiding volunteers and staff as they deliver essential relief and support to communities affected by emergencies and disasters.
Gardner comes to the Red Cross from FEMA Region 5, where she served as Capacity Development Branch Chief. In that role, she expanded the FEMA Integration Team by 200% and developed innovative workforce solutions that became a model across FEMA nationally. Her leadership emphasized team growth, training, and stability ensuring staff and reservists were well-prepared, resourced, and supported in serving communities during times of crisis.
Throughout her career, Gardner has built a reputation as a results-driven leader with a multi-dimensional perspective on disaster management. She has worked across all phases of the disaster cycle with partners at every level of government, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. Her ability to translate complex policies into practical, field-based solutions has made her a trusted voice in the emergency management community.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jeannie to the American Red Cross of Illinois,” said Kellie O’Connell, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross of Illinois. “Her depth of experience, commitment to supporting teams, and proven leadership in disaster response will strengthen our ability to serve communities across Illinois when they need us most.”
Gardner’s career includes leadership positions in both city government and FEMA Headquarters, where she spearheaded new initiatives, developed national strategies, and supported communities through some of the most challenging disasters in recent history. She has led large-scale teams in the field during major deployments, including Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, flooding in Detroit and East St. Louis, and the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
“I am honored to join the American Red Cross of Illinois and to support the incredible volunteers, staff, and partners who bring hope and help to people every day,” said Gardner. “Disaster relief is not just my profession; it is my lifelong passion. I look forward to building on the strong foundation across the region to ensure communities are prepared and no one faces disasters alone.”
