As Hispanic Heritage Month reaches its midpoint (September 15 – October 15), the urgent need for Hispanic and Latino blood donors continues to grow.
The American Red Cross of Illinois is proud to support Los Donantes (The Donors), a culturally resonant blood drive designed to increase donations within Chicago’s Latino Community. Blood donation is a powerful way for Hispanic and Latino communities to help bridge health equity gaps. While 60% of Hispanic individuals have blood type O, the most in demand type, only 3% to 5% of the eligible Hispanic individuals regularly donate.
"We're excited to host the Los Donantes Chicago Blood Drive created to celebrate and mobilize our Hispanic community to donate blood during Hispanic Heritage Month," said Kellie O'Connell, CEO of the American Red Cross of Illinois. "Los Donantes is about more than donating blood. It's about coming together as a community to help ensure that all patients regardless of background have access to the blood they need, helping close gaps in health equity.”
The need for blood is constant; 6-year-old Valerio Ceja is a powerful reminder; his heart is literally powered by blood donors. Before he was born, Valerio’s parents learned he would need multiple surgeries to treat a complex heart defect. At just one week into life, he underwent his first operation, relying on lifesaving blood products each time he fought his way back to recovery.
Today, Valerio is a thriving, energetic powerhouse who loves bowling, chips with salsa, and superheroes. His family shares their journey to inspire others to donate blood and help children like him.
Community members are encouraged to make an appointment to donate at the upcoming Los Donantes Chicago Blood Drive.
Join us to celebrate our culture and give hope to others.
