“I wish I could give them a hug.”
On New Year's Day 2017, disaster struck in the form of a home fire at the Stoeckel family in Bondurant, Iowa.
Donald Stoeckel was surprised to find that help from the American Red Cross was instantaneous. He said the kindness and professionalism of the volunteers who responded to his home led to a positive experience.
“I don’t have anything bad to say,” said Donald. “They were heartwarming at a time when we were devastated.”
A garage fire caused extensive smoke damage throughout their home. The family of six people and four dogs stayed in a a hotel until they could find temporary housing. The Stoeckels don't expect to be able to go home for three to four months during the cleanup and repair.
Donald attributes his confidence and ability to move forward in the recovery process to the support from the Red Cross.
“It was horrible thing to go through, but the two ladies from the Red Cross who visited did a phenomenal job,” Donald said. “I wish I could give them a hug.”
