KALAMAZOO (May 10, 2024) – The American Red Cross continues to address the needs of residents affected by the tornadoes that swept through southwest Michigan Tuesday. Red Cross disaster workers – 90 percent of whom are volunteers – are helping residents in need.
Today, Red Cross emergency response vehicles (ERV) will begin delivering meals to people in the hardest hit areas. ERVs are the backbone of the Red Cross disaster relief delivery system. They are essential to delivering vital services and bringing survivors hope that recovery is possible.
Also today, volunteers will continue to assess residential damage in affected communities. This work will help the Red Cross to better understand what help families may need in the coming days and weeks.
People can make a difference in the lives of those affected by disasters big and small. Call

In the aftermath of the tornadoes, the Red Cross opened an emergency shelter on Tuesday for people displaced or impacted. The shelter is located at First Assembly of God, 5550 Oakland Drive, in Portage. Eighteen people stayed in the shelter overnight on Thursday. To date, the shelter has provided 100 meals.
Everyone is welcome at the shelter, even if only for a short period of relief like getting something to eat or charging your phone. The shelter is intended to meet the immediate, short-term needs until long-term efforts can get underway. The Red Cross also plays a critical role in helping families and communities recover in the weeks and months after a disaster.
Anyone who was impacted by the tornadoes may call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for assistance.
